Fleming Therapy Services Inc. feeding therapists are licensed and credentialed Speech Therapist with specialized training in this area.
Speech therapist with expertise in feeding therapy will work with you and your child to provide the most effective, efficient, and ethical treatment of feeding disorders. Children with feeding disorders are evaluated to determine each individual’s unique needs and a treatment plan is developed to target feeding goals and objectives. The therapists are experienced in strategies to facilitate caloric intake and volume, decreasing negative behaviors during meal times, and special considerations in feeding such as weaning from feeding tubes.
Fleming feeding therapists work on preparing the overall body and mouth (lips, tongue, cheek, teeth) for feeding by identifying and decreasing triggers that may affect the child’s nutritional intake. Sensitivity in the mouth to certain tastes, textures, food temperatures or smells can each/all affect what the child will allow near, much less in, his or her mouth. Muscle tone may affect the child’s ability to locate the food and use the proper movements to move, chew and swallow the food.
The feeding specialist will take a medical and developmental history to determine if there are medical procedures that may need to be done prior to the initiation of feeding services. One example would be referral for a swallow study.
